2015 was a year full of activity and adventure and I confess that long before the year was out, I started worrying about the year ahead, and how to I might maintain the level of excitement, innovation and new experiences throughout 2016.
I think I can say with some confidence that I am one of very few people who can say that RTE has sorted my annual plans. Yes, their documentary ‘the Irish Pub’ inspired me and a few colleagues to plan a pub crawl which we will take a year to complete! We aren’t sure that the pubs included in the documentary actually deserve their inclusion, or indeed that others don’t deserve it better. So do let us know if you think RTE missed somewhere significant! We will start planning this very soon, taking in some of the nearer ones in the coming months, so let us know if you are interested in joining us! But be warned, after this we might try and visiting all the pubs named in the documentary ‘Britain’s Roughest pubs’!!!
Here are the pubs included in “The Irish Pub”:
County Carlow: O’Sheas, Borris; and Smyths, Newtown
Cavan: Gartlans, Kingscourt
Clare: O’Loclainns, Ballyvaughan
Cork: MacCarthys Bar, Castletownberel and De Barra’s, Clonakilty
Donegal: Brennans, Bundoran
Down: Mary Margaret’s, Hilltown
Dublin: Gravediggers, Glasnevin; Palace Bar, Temple Bar; Hole in the Wall, Phoenix Park; Merchant O’Sheas
Galway: Joe Keanes, Connemara
Kerry: Currans, and The South Pole, Dingle; John B Keanes, Listowel; Finucanes, Ballylongford
Kildare: Butterfields, Balitore; Clancy’s, Athy
Limerick: O’Shaughnessys, Glin
Mayo: Leonards, Ballina
Monaghan: McGinns, Newbliss
Roscommon: Coyle and Sons, Mount Talbot
Tipperary: McCarthys, Fethard
Westmeath: Gertie Browns, Athlone
So, whats been missed? What shouldn’t be there? What are the rules of engagement? Do we have to visit them all, even if we’ve been there before? Do we have to have alcohol in each pub? (Silly question, but I like to play dumb sometimes!) Do we get to rate them and if so, what’s the criteria? And who’s game?
